Each year I organize two or three charity events.  This is a guide and some lesions I have learned along the way.  There are examples of some of the cakes, cupcakes, floats, ice cream socials and crafts I have made for these events.  Also included are all of my baking tips, icing recipes, how to make candy using molds and candy melts.  I hope this will help you make a successful charity, sports or school fund-raiser and even a great lemonade stand.

Minnie Cupcakes

068

I made the Minnie sugar pieces for the top with royal icing.  Pipe one large circle then two smaller one for the ears.  The cupcakes were injected with buttercream or you can use whip cream.  The swirl on top was using a large star tip.

Mother’s Day Cake

misc pictures 158IMG_2121

Surprise Mom with a lovely cake for Mother’s Day.  The flowers and leaves are made of fondant.  To get a perfectly smooth side and top dip your spatula in water they shake it out. Put the cake on a lazy Susan and slowly turn it around while holding the spatula against the side of the cake.  This will give you a smooth side.  Do the same with the top.  The flowers and leaves can be cut with some cookie cutters.

Mini Pies

Mini Pies

I found these mini pie shells at the store and decided to surprise my family.  The package had six shells and was under $2.00.  I used Jell-O pudding and pie mix which only takes a few minutes to make.  The box mix made enough for 12 mini pies.  After dinner I brought out the pies and with a squirt of whip cream they were ready to serve.  They were a huge hit and so easy to make.  These would be a great addition to your bake sales.  If you don’t like pudding, then add some fruit filling.

Bake Sale, Fund Raiser or Lemonade Stand

lemonade stand

When summer comes along the kids set up their lemonade stand to earn a little bit of money so that they could buy some ice cream.  They made the lemonade from some fresh lemons they picked in the backyard added a little sugar and were ready to make a fortune.  The lemonade was so sour you could hardly drink it.  There is an easier way to make lemonade, just take some bottles of water, and the packets of lemonade mix.  Make a display with a couple of bottles.  Decorate with ribbon and tape a packet to the bottle for your display.  Put the rest of the bottles in a bucket of ice and spread the flavor packets out on the table.  There are all types of flavors to choose from.  This is a fast and easy addition to any fund raiser or bake sale.

Bake Sale Tip – Ice Cream Cone Cupcakes

misc 2012 275   You can actually bake cupcakes inside a regular ice cream cone.  One thing I found was that if you only ice the top of the cone, once you get a bite or two into the ice cream cone it is just cake and cone and too dry.  I inject all of my cupcakes and ice cream cones with either butter cream icing or whipped cream icing.  If you do this you will have a delicious treat all the way down to the bottom of the cone.  These are great not only for bake sales but also lemonade stands during the summer time.

Bake Sale Tip

bake sale 015

When setting up your bake sale make signs showing the  price of all the items.  Most of my bake sale items are $1.00 because everyone can afford a dollar.  These cakes were donated by one of the ladies I work with.  We actually had an icing class the morning of the bake sale.  I brought the piping bags, tips and icing and showed two of my co-workers how to put them together and ice the cakes.  They had a great time and the cakes sold for $10 each which was donated to the local homeless shelter.

Butterfly and Flower Brownies

023

Add some bright little butterflies and flowers for your next get together.  There are brownies but you can also use a normal cake mix.  If you want to surprise your guest put one tablespoon in your cake mix.  Watkins now has their extracts available at Walmart.  My favorite extracts are caramel, rum and chocolate.  If you don’t have a Walmart in your area Watkins has a website that you can order from.  Watkins also has an entire program if you want to start a home based business selling their products.

Barbie Cupcakes

barbie cakes

These Barbie Cupcakes were made with the Wonder pan I purchased at Michaels.  The cupcake is the skirt,  Ice the cupcake and drape fondant over to make the skirt.  The top of the doll is a pick.  Use strips of the same fondant to make the shirt.  Decorate the dress with icing and confetti.  The only problem with these little doll cupcakes are that no one wants to eat them because they are too cute.

Have Fun with Cupcakes

069

These silicone baking cups are great to make funny animals or even a happy clown.  You can use cookies or fondant to make the faces.  The pig tail was made with gum paste.  Gum paste is similar to fondant but dries much harder.  There are all type of picks with clown, girl or boys heads to decorate the cupcake.  Let the kids have fun and see what they come up with.
