How to get out of the dog house for Father’s Day Tip #7

Garden Cake

Gift Idea – My father is a farmer at heart so my brother and I bought him a wheelbarrow and some tomato plants for Father’s Day.  This is a great gift and hopefully he would forget about the streaking.  Fat chance!  Watch what you buy your father because it could come back to haunt you and boy did this one.  Since I was grounded I was recruited to assist in the digging, hauling manure and planting.  He really did love the gift.  So if you have a backyard gardener you might want to consider putting together a wheelbarrow some plants or seeds but I draw the line with manure.  Miracle Grow for plants is a great substitute.

The dirt for this cake are made with crushed Nilla Wafers.  The carrots and cabbage were made with fondant.

Getting out of the dog house for Father’s Day Tip #6

EASTER FLYER 2012 130 EASTER FLYER 2012 129

My husband loves to build military models and had built a wooden box and lined it with plastic to float the 6′ submarine in to see if it would float.  The box looked like a coffin and I hated it.  Our neighbor next door purchased an above ground pool and my husband started to look at it with envy.  Anyway to solve the problem of the wood box Kmart had a 10 foot blow up pool on sale.  This was the chance to get rid of the eye sore forever.  I made him promise to get rid of the box.  He agreed he would and couldn’t wait to blow it up and try out the sub.  The true test was when he brought out the sub and put it in.  Little did I know that the 6′ sub had been sold and he now had a sub that was a little over 7′ that didn’t fit in the new pool.  I thought that was the end of this issue, fat chance.  Our grandkids came over and loved the pool so it was here to stay.

The following Sunday there was an ad in the newspaper for an even larger pool that was over 10′ and he started pestering me about the larger pool.  This went on for a couple of days before I couldn’t stand it anymore and we went to look at it.  He pulled the line that Father’s Day is coming along with his birthday, so I finally gave up and we were proud owners of a 10′ pool.  I can’t wait to see my water bill this month.  But that wasn’t the end of it, everyday when I came home from work there was a new filter, easy up patio cover, pool cover, foam garage mats for under the pool and chemicals.  Our little $60 pool was rapidly becoming a $200 pool and the spouse was heading for the dog house.  The only thing that saved him and the pool were our two grandkids.  The kids came over and we moved a picnic table and they had so much fun playing, diving, jumping, belly flopping that they had us all laughing.  So those two little tikes got grandpa out of the dog house for this upcoming Father’s Day.

The pool cake I had made last year for a competition.  The people I used push molds for the faces and painted on their features.  The picnic table is crackers that are held together with chocolate painted on them.  The barbeque is made with rice krispie treats dipped chocolate and a cookie for the grill.  The pool is a 6″ cake stacked on the 1/4 sheet cake.

Getting out of the dog house for Father’s Day Tip #5

2010 pictures etc 033

In my biology class there was all kinds of snakes in their glass enclosures.  I thought it would be fun to walk them across the senior lawn at lunch time.  I recruited one of my friends and we took them out for some long over due sunshine.  Needless to say everyone scrambled to get out of the way.  My dad was called and I was in the dog house again for a month.

Getting out of the dog house for Father’s Day Tip#4

2010 pictures etc 068

This little race car just might get you out of trouble for pulling your car in the garage with flames coming out from under the hood.  How was I to know you had to keep putting oil in that darn thing?  I took art not auto shop in school.  The only good thing was the house didn’t burn down.  I learned all the bus routes until I saved up for a new engine.

How to get out of the dog house tip #3

st patricks day 008

For those of you who do not know what streaking is; in the 1970’s people would take off all their clothes and take off running naked.  It was socially acceptable in the 70’ and you just never knew when you would get an eye full.

My mother was friends with another family not far from our house that had two teens the same age as my brother and I.  After each football game everyone would go to Shakey’s Pizza to hang out and have fun.  I talked the younger son into streaking through Shakey’s Pizza after an upcoming football game.  I paid him the money agreed upon and couldn’t wait until Friday.  Friday came and all of my friends along with half of the senior class went to Shakey’s after the big game.  I didn’t tell anyone ahead of time of the special activity I had planned.  The time finally arrived and out of the bathroom runs the streaker (I won’t reveal the name to protect his identity).  He took off running just as fast as his little white buns could through Shakey’s.  There was a lot of laughing, cheering and whistling as he made his way to the front door.  As he as about to hit the front door the football team had arrived and saw what was happening.  They held the door and he had no choice but to run back through the restaurant to the bathroom.   We all laughed and cheered even harder at the second trip.  I think he even ran faster than the first time.  This was great!  Our streaker quickly got dressed and left Shakey’s to a standing ovation.

The next day at school he demanded another $20 since he had to streak twice.  No way was I going to pay him. I had only hired him to streak one way.  I though that was the end of it but boy was I wrong.  At the next football game I was kidnapped and tied up by him and his friends.  They took me to my parent’s house and demanded the 2nd part of the streaking fee.  My mom when white when she found out what I did and my dad was having a hard time trying not to laugh.  Dad paid him the extra $20 and I was grounded for a month.  I argued that I didn’t do the streaking and just couldn’t understand why Mom was so upset.  Anyway that story is still brought up at every family gathering.

To create the $20 on the cake, all you need to fondant, clear vanilla extract and gel food coloring.  You can paint on fondant just like you would paint with water colors except using the clear vanilla makes it dry instantly, so don’t make any mistakes.

Making a Griffin Egg Night Light

griffin egg

This griffin egg was made using an Ostrich egg.  To cut the egg I used a drill to make a hole then using some needle-nose pliers to gently chip out the opening.  The egg was painted black and when the pain was still wet I sprinkled in some gold glitter.  Once all was dry then I used a clear sealant.  The gems were on a role that highlighted the front of the egg.  At the bottom of the egg is a small hole which I inserted a flameless tea light to make this is to a unique night-light.

Get out of the dog house for Father’s Day Tip #2

073

Each year when the family would gather at Father’s Day my dad loved to tell all of the funny stories that my brother and I put him through when we were growing up.  Most of these stories are written down in my Father’s Day book that was just released.  So over the next couple of weeks I will be sharing them with you along with some gift ideas we came up with to try to get out of the dog house once and for all.

These ties were made with Candy Melts. This candy mold I bought off the internet.  Let’s face it how many real ties can one dad have?  At least these can sweeten his disposition when he finds out that your boy friend blew up the mailbox.

Get out of the dog house for Father’s Day Tip #1

2010 pictures etc 197

Real Estate Signs in the Front Yard – One of the guys I dated had a mother who was a Real Estate Agent.  One morning I woke up to my Dad yelling for me to get out of bed and get out here.  In the front yard there were 20 real estate signs everywhere.  I thought it was funny but wiped the smile off of my face when I looked at Dad.  It did mess up the front lawn.  I didn’t get grounded from hanging around with the wrong crowd but was volunteered for lawn duty to fix the front yard.

Just in case your dad is particular on his lawn, a trip to the local nursery for some nice plants or even an electric trimmer might just get you out of the dog house.

Train Cake for Dad

tromas the train 044

Is the guy in your life a train nut?  Well I have one!  He went so far as jacking up center support beam in the basement and moving it so that his trains could go back and forth between the rooms.  The only thing I could visualize was watching the middle of the house cave in and everything slide down into the basement.  True story!

Anyway, for the train nuts here are two trains that would make any dad smile on Father’s Day.  The 3D mold I purchased at Michaels.  The railroad tracks are Hershey’s chocolate bars.  If you have some aggressions that you need to get out, put some Nilla Wafers in a plastic bag and use the back of ice cream scooper or meat tenderizer to make a sand for your railroad tracks.  Oreos make up the wheels and pipe in the rest.

Emu Egg Night Light

Emu Night Light

This emu egg is perfect size for a night-light.  It is 4 1/4″ tall.  I used a craft drill and the smallest bits that come with it to etch the egg and then had to break into my husband’s drill bits to find one small enough to make the holes.  I made the opening larger at the bottom of the egg and put in a flameless candle to light up the egg.  This was a tough project but I’ve learned what works and what doesn’t.  I’m going to have to order some more eggs to play with.
